AVESTA: YIMA/SHAH JAMSHID.

YASHTS (Hymns of praise) 19. ZAMYAD YASHT ("Hymn to the Earth")

•30. The strong Kingly majesty, (Farr/Khwarneh) etc

•31.Which united itself with Yima, the shinning possessing a good congregation, for a long time when he ruled over the seven portioned Earth, over men and Daevas, over sorcerers and Pairikas, over Cathras, Kaoyasand Karapanas.

•32.He took away from the Daevas both blessings and profits, both fatness and herds, both food and praise, in whose rule were poured out for the body imperishable foods , immortal were men and beasts, the water and trees not dried up.

•33.In his rule was no cold, no heat , no old death, no death, no envy created by the Daevas, on account of absence of Lie( durug) before he himself untrue began to love lying speech.

•34. Then when he himself untrue began to love lying speech, then flew away the Majesty( Farr) with the body of a bird. When the ruler Yima, the shinning possessing a good congregation no longer saw the majesty, then Yima displeased staggered away to evil thoughts, he fell afrightened down on the Earth.

•35. First removed itself the Majesty from Yima, the shinning, son of Vavanho with the body of a bird flapping it’s wings. There seized this Majesty,Mithra, who possesses wide pastures, hears with ears and has a thousand strengths. We praise Mithra, the Ruler of all regions, whom AhuraMazda created as the most Majestic of the heavenly Yazataas.

•36. When for the second time the Majesty from Yima, the shinning, son of Vavanho with the body of a bird flapping it’s wings. Then seized this Majesty, the son of the Aithwyanian clan, the strong clan-Thraetaona because he was the most victorious among victorious men except AhuraMazda.

•37.Who slew the snake Dahakka with three jaws, three heads, six eyes, a thousand strengths, the very strong Durugbelonging to the Daevas, the evil of the world, the wicked, which very strong Durug, Anra-manyus has created towards the corporeal world for slaying the purity of the world. •38. When for the third time, went away the Majesty from Yima, the shinning, son of Vivanho with the body of a bird flapping it’s wings, then the valiant minded Kerecacpa seized this Majesty, because he was the strongest among bold men except Zarathustra, except the manly valour. •

Note:

1. For six hundred and sixteen years and six months (Bundahishn 34.4).
7. Azhi Dahaka (Zohak) and his followers.
8. The Glory is described as departing three times, because it is threefold, according as it belongs to the king considered as a priest, warrior, or a farmer/worker. In that threefold character it is identical with Adar Farnbag, Adar Gushasp, and Adar Burzin Mehr.
9. A raven, one of the incarnations of the Genius of Victory (Verethraghna, Warharam).

Yama

Yama of Vedic Indian Aryans

Yama, also called Dharmraj was born of Vivasvat, himself the son of Vivasvan and Sanjana. His lineage goes to the Luminous, Surya i.e the Sun God. His name means to control. Thus he rules over Kama, temptations and lust and Bhoga, the enjoyment of the same. His sister Yami rules the opposite traits. Thus both are present in all of us. He was the first mortal to die and reach the realm of the Gods. He thus gained rulership over death and the ability to judge the souls. According to their deeds, they were sent to pitris, the dwelling of the forefathers, narak, hell or to be reborn on Earth.

Both Yamas in Iranian and Indian myth guard Hell with the help of two four-eyed dogs. He has also passed into Buddhist mythology as guardian of the region of the dead.

Jam-e-Jamshid/ Cup of Jamshid

Jamshid also possessed a magical seven-ringed cup, the Jām-e Jam,

Jam-e Jahan nama, Jam-e Jahan Ara, Jam-e Giti nama,

Jam-e Keikhosrow. which was filled with the elixir of immortality and permitted him to observe all of creation and the seven heavens.

And so Shah Jamshid became vain, egotistic, narcissistic and conceited.

He began to give ear to false praise and flattery. Sycophants surrounded

Him and one day the royal glory, farr abandoned him in the form of a raven

      Fire ordeal of Siyawash

      The festival of Chaharshanbe Suri

The festival of Chaharshanbe Suri is an ancient one, originally called Hamaspathmaedaya and today Farvardinegan. It was believed that the spirits of the dead would come to meet family members on the last five days of the year.

Ahura Mazda’s seven holy immortals (Aməša Spənta) were also honoured, and were given a fond farewell at the dawn of the New Year. In the evening after dusk of the eve of Wednesday, people collect firewood in an open space. Fires are lit and people jump over them singing, sorkhi-ye to az man, zardi-ye man az to, meaning “Let your redness, good health be mine, my paleness, weakness and ill health be yours“.

(قاشق‌زنی / Spoon banging: Children in disguise go from house to house hitting spoons on a plate and are given sweets.

The festival also celebrates the Fire ordeal of Siyawash of the Shahnameh.

      Fire ordeal of Siyâvash:

Fire ordeal of Siyâvash:  The young handsome Prince Siwawash was the son of King Kay Kavus of Iran.

He was taught the arts of war by none other than the legendary Rostam.

His stepmother, Sudabeh, the Queen of Iran is consumed by a burning lust for him.

When he refuses to sleep with her, the evil Sudabehaccuses Siyawash of having raped her and even brings forth two still born foetuses as proof.

Siyavash, clothed in white riding his black stallion is forced to prove his innocence by riding through a mountain of fire.
