The story of Pirouz Shah (459-484 A.D)and the

appalling, horrific drought that lasted seven years

                    until the Jashn-e-Tirgan

Once, during Pirooz Shah Sasani’s righteous reign,

Pirooz collected no taxes, from India imported grain.

Men splashed water, one-another mercifully, it’d rain.

Jashn-e-tirgan celebrated on the 13th day of tir month/ july in the summertime is dedicated, devoted to angel tishtrya, ruler of thunder, lightening and rain. It is a joyous, happy lively occasion when people collect together to dance, read poetry, splash water on each other and eat a traditional communal meal of aush/spinach soup with dessert of sholezard. There are two stories linked with the festival. there was a border dispute between the righteous king manucher of iran and sinful, wicked turanian king afrasiab. arash the archer was asked to define, demarcate the indistinct, obscure border. the Hero stood on mt. damavand and let loose the arrow from his mighty bow, graced, blessed by the amesa spenti arimati. the arrow flew high and far, thousand farsakhs to lead near ferghana, which became the new border. rain came to bless the newly achieved peace, serenity . Mighty Arash gave his life for the crucial venture. it is said that his spirit will lead lost people from mt.damavand to safety even today. the other story relates to the terrible aridity, crippling drought during the reign of Pirooz shah. he forgave all taxes, imported grain from india for seven years till rains mercifully came at tirgan.
